The Ilfochrome process (formerly called Cibachrome) is most noted for its long-lasting, superior rich and vibrant color. Multiple layers of metallic azo dyes are incorporated directly into the emulsion of the material (in this case, polyester), creating a unique three-dimensional quality that quickly invites the viewer into the scene. Only Ilfochrome uses these special dyes, which also produce the longest print stability available today.
The process can only be used to make prints directly from transparency (slide) film. Ilfochrome printmaking is unique in that the print is made directly from the transparency, so no negative is needed. Making these hand-made photographs involves multiple techniques to control image contrast, shade and highlight detail, color, and density. Several days may be required to make one desired print when formulating a new photographic recipe. Very few laboratories have the equipment and master printers with the expertise necessary to be successful in creating Ilfochrome prints.
Ilfochrome prints are sensitive to extreme heat and should be mounted using an archival, non-heat process. Once mounted, matted, and framed, these prints will retain their vibrancy for a lifetime, meeting the highest archival standards.
| Keep your print out of direct sunlight. | |
| Avoid contact with the surface of your print. It will show fingerprints and scratch easily. | |
| Avoid excessively hot or humid places. | |
| For best lighting, use a quartz halogen narrow spot bulb. A dimmer switch will also help to show off your print. |
